Job Description
Job Title: Structural Engineer (Highways)
Location: Penrith, Cumbria
Contract Duration: Minimum 6 months
Pay Rate: £400 per day (Inside IR35)
Job Purpose:
The Structural Engineer will provide expert engineering support on a highways project including the design, assessment and analysis of highway structures such as bridges and culverts. This role requires a minimum 6-month commitment to ensure high-quality, safe and efficient execution of all engineering tasks in line with project specifications and industry standards.
Key Responsibilities:
Lead the design, analysis and assessment of highway structures (e.g. bridges, culverts, embankments).
Conduct site inspections to assess the condition and integrity of existing structures.
Collaborate with project teams to ensure timely delivery of engineering solutions.
Prepare technical reports, drawings and documentation.
Provide advice and technical support to junior engineers and contractors.
Liaise with stakeholders including local authorities and contractors.
Ensure compliance with health, safety and environmental regulations.
Contribute to the risk assessment and health and safety planning.
Skills and Qualifications:
Degree in Civil or Structural Engineering (or equivalent).
Chartered or working towards chartered status (e.g. ICE, IStructE).
Minimum 3-5 years' experience in structural engineering, particularly within highways projects.
Proficient in structural design software (e.g. AutoCAD, Tekla etc.).
Strong knowledge of relevant design standards (e.g. Eurocodes, Highways England standards).
Ability to perform structural analysis and design with attention to detail.
Experience in site inspections and managing structural assessments.
Full UK driving licence (required for site visits).
Strong communication and teamwork skills.
Desirable Skills:
Experience working with Tier 1 contractors.
Experience leading or managing small teams of engineers.
