Job Description

Scientific Officer - Biological Resources Unit Manchester £23,342 - £36,263 (dep on exp) Full time, Permanent  The Role: We are recruiting for a Scientific Officer to join a research facility based in Manchester. This role involves providing day-to-day care and welfare monitoring of laboratory animals within the Experimental Team. You will support research teams by conducting experimental procedures, ensuring compliance with regulations, and maintaining high standards of care in line with the Animals (Scientific Procedures) Act 1986. The position requires working closely with internal teams to facilitate oncology research while ensuring ethical and welfare considerations are met. Duties: Carry out routine animal husbandry, welfare checks, and environmental monitoring. Perform surgical and non-surgical experimental procedures under Personal Licence authority. Maintain accurate records of observations, procedures, and research data. Assist with the training of staff in licensed and non-licensed techniques. Ensure compliance with the Animals (Scientific Procedures) Act 1986 and institutional policies. Support research teams in developing and optimising in vivo models. Contribute to the general upkeep and hygiene of the facility. Participate in weekend and bank holiday rota cover as required. Required Skills: HNC/HND in Animal Technology, a related degree, or equivalent experience. Experience working in a laboratory animal facility or similar research environment. Current or previous holder of a Personal Licence (PIL A & B) under the Animals (Scientific Procedures) Act 1986. Knowledge of laboratory animal welfare, oncology models, and relevant regulations. Strong organisational skills with the ability to manage tasks effectively. Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal. Ability to work flexibly, including occasional out-of-hours shifts.
