Job Description

James Lewis is currently supporting a prominent multi-dimensional Principal Contractor in their search for an HSE Manager to join their team. This company operates across diverse project sectors, including data centres, education, commercial, healthcare, and science & technology, with a strong emphasis on critical infrastructure in London and the Southeast. The specific project involves the construction of film recording studios and a data centre, which form part of a larger mixed-use development in Chertsey. Work on this site has been ongoing since 2023, with the current phase expected to extend through the end of summer and potential for additional packages thereafter. Applications are welcome from both permanent and freelance/contract candidates. Reporting directly to the H&S Director, the HSE Manager will oversee all aspects of HSE management and planning across the business. This includes ensuring compliance with relevant legislation, maintaining company standards, and offering competent compliance advice and support to project teams and employees. The responsibilities of the HSE Manager will include managing weekly site health and safety meetings for subcontractors, auditing subcontractor "Friday Packs" with the site manager to ensure accuracy, and conducting monthly reviews and updates of site-specific plans such as SWMP, EMP, CPP, TMLP, EFP, and site safety plans. They will also review and audit the issuance of permits on site, address any identified errors or issues, and ensure the company adheres to the 'Control of Major Accident Hazards Regulations.' Additionally, the HSE Manager will investigate accidents and ensure documentation is updated, maintain statutory and project-specific registers, and perform inspections such as LOLER and PUWER audits. Regular health and safety audits, quality assurance checks, site inspections, and reviews of subcontractor practices will be integral to this role. They will also facilitate risk assessments, oversee fire prevention measures, and ensure compliance with the company’s Safe System of Work. Candidates should have at least three years of experience in a similar role within the construction industry, with expertise in health and safety, quality assurance, fire safety, emergency first aid, asbestos awareness, and environmental awareness. A Technical Membership of IOSH, a NEBOSH Construction Certificate, and an active CSCS card are essential. Only candidates with relevant UK construction sector experience will be considered
